One big mistake
NY Times: So the future of General Motors (and the $50 billion taxpayer investment in it) now depends on a vehicle that costs $41,000 but offers the performance and interior space of a $15,000 economy car. The company is moving forward on a second generation of Volts aimed at eliminating the initial model’s considerable shortcomings. (In truth, the first-generation Volt was as good as written off inside G.M., which decided to cut its 2011 production volume to a mere 10,000 units rather than the initial plan for 60,000.) Yet G.M. seemingly has no plan for turning its low-volume “eco-flagship†into a mass-market icon like the Prius.
We should’ve let GM ride off into the sunset. That’s right, we should’ve let it die. I thought the bailout was a horrible idea from the get go. I know a lot of folks that think it’s un-American to buy cars from foreign manufacturers but what choice do you have if American car companies create bad cars?

CNN: “Gary is starting to catch on to the work, but admits the work is not only physically exhausting; it’s also tedious and monotonous. As the day draws to a close, a large truck comes through the work area and starts picking up the boxed grapes. It’s the end of a long tiring day and while many workers will be back here tomorrow, none of us could imagine doing this every day.”

CNN Money: “The CEO claimed that Microsoft needs to take its time to get its products just right to compete in the intensely scrutinized tablet space. He said that chipmaker Intel (INTC, Fortune 500) will be coming out next year with a tablet-specific processor called “Oak Trail” that will help manufacturers make better tablets that run Windows 7.”
I find it interesting that Intel is now making tablet specific chip sets, after Apple ships a highly successful device. Ballmer also states that the Windows based devices will likely be cheaper than the iPad.
I guess we’ll see. I hope they’re good because that’ll just push Apple and others to make better devices, which makes things better for all of us.
I’d also expect to see some Android based devices hitting the market pretty soon.
DailyTECH: “If you download Jackeey Wallpaper from Google’s Android Market for your smartphone, you might want to start worrying just about now. The popular app has been exposed as potentially being a piece of malware designed to steal your personal info and send it to China.”

Wired: “Gibson’s vision is to monetize news content on the backend, by scouring the internet for infringing copies of his client’s articles, then suing and relying on the harsh penalties in the Copyright Act — up to $150,000 for a single infringement — to compel quick settlements. Since Righthaven’s formation in March, the company has filed at least 80 federal lawsuits against website operators and individual bloggers who’ve re-posted articles from the Las Vegas Review-Journal, his first client.”
Clearly the man doesn’t understand the internet and should pull all the content he’s worried about from public view so it doesn’t get read, and linked to.

There’s definitely a movie in there somewhere, a spy thriller, starring Bruce Willis, Vin Diesel and Sandra Bullock. Lot’s of terrible Hollywood user interfaces and gadgets. It’ll be huge!

I hadn’t heard of this film until last Friday evening, Kim played the trailer for me. Get Low, starring Robert Duvall, may turn out to be the sleeper of the summer.

All Things Digital: “So what happened? The Time Inc. insiders I talked to don’t have a clear answer, presumably because they can’t get one from Apple itself. One theory: Apple is concerned about the publisher’s plans for the consumer data it would collect with each subscription. A darker one: Steve Jobs loves the idea of digital magazines and wants to control the market for himself.”
