I ❤ Carvel Ice Cream

Paul Kafasis: “The matter came to a head June 16th, when Dina Lohan attempted to use the card while picking up an ice cream cake. Upon being asked for ID, and having the card confiscated, the elder Ms. Lohan called the police. There’s a good use of taxpayer dollars.”

I feel sorry for the Lohan’s, I really do. They believe they are special and deserve special treatment. Unfortunately they’re about as screwed up one family can get. I love Dina Lohan’s comment after the “Special free ice cream for life for a select few” card was revoked.

“It just shows how we [Lohans] get treated so much worse than regular people.”

Regular people? Paul’s footnote is priceless.

Some people.

The Murky Waters of the App Store

ShiftJelly: “I see now why people are so angry at the ‘murky’ nature of the App Store, and I’m starting to agree with them. My Frame was approved by Apple 3 times (once for each version we released), and then now, at version 1.2 they decide it’s to be removed?”

As an App Developer you have to get it while the gettin’s good. Hopefully Apple never decides Pharmacokinetics Calculators are bad for the store. 🙂

Holy Cow Man, it’s July?

That’s right, it’s time to dig out the stars and stripes, as we celebrate the birth of The United States of America.

Movie line of the week

Good morning movie liners!

Cut, cut, cut! Here’s the line, good luck!

For you are all equally blessed. For I have the pride, the privilege, nay, the pleasure of introducing to you to a knight, sired by knights. A knight who can trace his lineage back beyond Charlemagne. I first met him atop a mountain near Jerusalem, praying to God, asking his forgiveness for the Saracen blood spilt by his sword. Next, he amazed me still further in Italy when he saved a fatherless beauty from the would-be ravishing of her dreadful Turkish uncle.

Ok, quick, what movie! Send your guesses here.

Naughty AT&T

Computerworld: “Like it did with the Backflip, AT&T has removed the option to install unofficial apps onto its new HTC Aria phone. If something’s outside of the Android Market — a beta program such as Swype, for example, or one of several tethering apps offered only through developers’ Web sites — you won’t be able to install it; the option to do so is mysteriously missing from the “Applications” settings menu where it’d typically be found.”

Pogue on Android

New York Times: “Last November, you might have been tempted by the Motorola Droid, “the best Android phone on the market.” A month later, the HTC Hero was “the best Android phone on the market.” By January, “the best Android phone yet” was the Nexus One. In April, “the best Android device that you can purchase” was the HTC Incredible. In May, “the best Android phone on the market” was the Sprint Evo.”

Go read the entire article, it’s a good read, too many quotable paragraphs to include here. He makes some great points about the choice between Android based phones and the iPhone. The bottom line: iPhone is a better choice, and experience, for everyday folks. Android is a good choice if you’re more technically inclined.

Say Goodbye to Flash

Campaign Monitor: “The beautiful thing about moving to a JavaScript based solution is that, unlike the closed Flash component, we had complete control over every bit of the charts. This meant we could easily add features we felt were missing from the default charts and offer a really nice experience for you and your clients. Here are some of the more interesting extras we added to the base library:”

I like stuff like this, a real world example that makes sense.

The iPhone is coming, the iPhone is coming!

SFGate: “June 29 (Bloomberg) — Verizon Wireless, the largest U.S. mobile-phone company, will start selling Apple Inc.’s iPhone next year, ending AT&T Inc.’s exclusive hold on the smartphone in the U.S., two people familiar with the plans said.”

Again, more good stuff for the smart phone market. There are a bazillion screaming Verizon customers clamoring for iPhones. It’ll be a good start to 2011 for Apple, and Verizon, if the rumor is true.

Torn, which smart phone?

Over the weekend I had the opportunity to goof around with my cousin’s Droid Incredible by HTC. Oh my! It’s a beautiful phone, I love the sense UI. The iPhone definitely has big competition and since you can get this phone on Verizon it makes purchasing it quite easy for those looking for something close enough to an iPhone.

I’m very tempted by it and I have an iPhone app for heavens sake!

Bravo HTC for upping the ante. This is good for the smart phone market, no matter how you slice it.

Wireless cameras? DUH!

Dave Winer: “Imagine how a camera with the Twitter or Facebook logo would work. You wouldn’t even need to configure it beyond telling it your Facebook username and password. If Canon isn’t working on this now they’ll be out of the low-end camera business in less than five years. That’s how quickly the Apple/Google juggernaut is moving.”

It would make complete sense for camera manufacturers to embed wireless into their cameras, especially at the low end. Dave’s hit the nail on the head. If they’re not doing this now, they’re not very smart. I’d imagine it would be quite easy to get a wireless chipset with an entire IP stack that can do everything Dave mentions above for fractions of a penny, they don’t need some fancy schmancy OS, just the basics on the camera. The configuration can be done on the client, or better yet, on the web.

For me the question is, who will be first?

I know I’d written about this at one point or another, I just can’t find it. Must have been in a tweet.
