Egypt Disappears

renesys: “Confirming what a few have reported this evening: in an action unprecedented in Internet history, the Egyptian government appears to have ordered service providers to shut down all international connections to the Internet. Critical European-Asian fiber-optic routes through Egypt appear to be unaffected for now. But every Egyptian provider, every business, bank, Internet cafe, website, school, embassy, and government office that relied on the big four Egyptian ISPs for their Internet connectivity is now cut off from the rest of the world. Link Egypt, Vodafone/Raya, Telecom Egypt, Etisalat Misr, and all their customers and partners are, for the moment, off the air.”

Ruins of Detroit

Etsy Blog: “So decrees the mission statement of photographers Yves Marchand and Romain Meffre, authors of The Ruins of Detroit. These intrepid two have approached the waning city of Detroit as a fallen American colossus, navigating buckling floors, curlicued shards of lead paint and dust covered relics they document the industrial capital’s last gasp.”

Add it to the wish list.

Two Suns?

The Huffington Post: “When that happens, for at least a few weeks, we’d see a second sun, Carter says. There may also be no night during that timeframe”

How cool would that be?

Darn

The Spokesman-Review: “As Reiswig and her co-workers snapped photos of the police robot examining the backpack at the northeast corner of Washington Street and Main Avenue, posting some of them to their Facebook pages, the Spokane bomb squad was coming to a frightening realization. The backpack was equipped with a powerful bomb, positioned to inflict maximum blast damage toward the intended route of Spokane’s annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day march through downtown.”

So much for tolerance.

I’ll have a gigantor mocha

New York Times: “Owners of BlackBerrys, iPhones or iPod Touches can use them to pay by downloading the free Starbucks Card app and holding their phones in front of a scanner at Starbucks cash registers. The money is subtracted from their Starbucks account, which they can load with credit cards or, on iPhones, with PayPal funds.”

You can now buy your 55-gallon barrel of your favorite coffee, with your smart phone.

Detroit

David Byrne: “As I ride around town on this trip I pass mile after mile of residential neighborhoods in which most, or at least half, of the houses are simply gone, while others are boarded up, burnt out and one or two are still inhabited. This isn’t in the suburbs or rural countryside—this is close to downtown:”

Wow, what a great read. Hat tip Daniel Jalkut.

I don’t know why I’m so taken with Detroit, but I am, and have been for quite a while now.

Greatness

Scripting News: “All these people who are so great aren’t really that much greater than the average schmuck on the subway. There really isn’t that much range in the smartness or fitness of human beings. We all have about the same lifespan, have the same experiences, birth, childhood, puberty, etc. To think there are some people that are so much better than the rest of us, well, I wouldn’t trust that so much.”

Don’t resolve to be great, just work hard at something you love and you’ll probably be all right.

I know there’s nothing great about what I do, or who I am, but I love what I do and I’ll continue to pursue my dreams. I may get there, I may not, but I gotta try.

Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas!

An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”Luke 2:9-12

A Pumpkin for a Wedding

I love carving pumpkins, I really do. It’s something we do every year as a family. This year we didn’t manage to have the time, or everyone together, to carve like we normally do. I guess it’s something I’m going to have to get used to now our girls are all grown up.

When Haileigh and Aaron were married in early October Haileigh asked if I would carve a pumpkin for the wedding. It was a perfect fit, a fall themed wedding, and my love of carving pumpkins. How could I refuse?

It was a challenge, a good challenge, I wanted it to be perfect. It was after all my little girls big day, it had to be perfect. I was nervous about how it would turn out. In the end I was happy with the results, and more importantly, Haileigh was happy with it.

Water? What’s that?

Fresno Bee: “12:42 p.m. Highway 198 through Visalia has been closed in both directions due to flooding from rainstorms that are pounding the area. It’s unclear when the freeway will re-open.

It’s been raining for a couple of days in the San Joaquin Valley, and the valley can’t deal with it. The ground is like a full sponge, it can’t take anymore.
