I want this

Ahhhhhhh!Holy Kaw!: “That’s right. The red-brick Georgian beauty that housed so many of Macaulay Culkin’s shenanigans is hitting the housing market on Thursday, and will be selling for $2.4 million.”

If I had a huge pocket full of cash I’d buy this place. I know my lovely wife wouldn’t mind.

Actually, there’s another one I think I’d prefer. The home from Father of the Bride. It’s perfect.

The home used in the film is in Pasadena, California.

More 48fps Hobbit Talk

Peter Jackson: “However, we’re going the other way, shooting at 48 fps with a 270 degree shutter angle. This gives the 48 fps a lovely silky look, and creates a very pleasing look at 24 fps as well. In fact, our DP, Andrew Lesnie, and I prefer the look of 24 fps when it comes from a 48 fps master. “

This film will be best viewed at 48 frames per second, in 2D. I hope, beyond hope, he does a “standard” 2D version of the film.

THE HOBBIT at 48fps? It’s true.

Peter Jackson: “It looks much more lifelike, and it is much easier to watch, especially in 3-D. We’ve been watching HOBBIT tests and dailies at 48 fps now for several months, and we often sit through two hours worth of footage without getting any eye strain from the 3-D. It looks great, and we’ve actually become used to it now, to the point that other film experiences look a little primitive. I saw a new movie in the cinema on Sunday and I kept getting distracted by the juddery panning and blurring. We’re getting spoilt!”

I’ve been looking forward to The Hobbit and I hope Mr. Jackson can recapture all the magic of The Lord of the Rings, but I see something very troubling in his post. Can you spot it? Yep, it says 3D. Sigh. When will the ugly trend stop?

Is good movie making dead?

GQ: “And no Inception. Now, to be fair, in modern Hollywood, it usually takes two years, not one, for an idea to make its way through the alimentary canal of the system and onto multiplex screens, so we should really be looking at summer 2012 to see the fruit of Nolan’s success. So here’s what’s on tap two summers from now: an adaptation of a comic book. A reboot of an adaptation of a comic book. A sequel to a sequel to an adaptation of a comic book. A sequel to a reboot of an adaptation of a TV show. A sequel to a sequel to a reboot of an adaptation of a comic book. A sequel to a cartoon. A sequel to a sequel to a cartoon. A sequel to a sequel to a sequel to a cartoon. A sequel to a sequel to a sequel to a sequel to a movie based on a young-adult novel. And soon after: Stretch Armstrong. You remember Stretch Armstrong, right? That rubberized doll you could stretch and then stretch again, at least until the sludge inside the doll would dry up and he would become Osteoporosis Armstrong? A toy that offered less narrative interest than bingo?”

He doesn’t mention the horrible 3D trend, which only lends to enhance bad movies and action films. It looks like 2011 and 2012 will be a bit thin on great movies. Then again, we’re all going to die in 2012, right?

Oh, and Stretch Armstrong? Who green lighted that?

3D Headache?

Roger Ebert : “So: dark, small, stroby, headache inducing, alienating. And expensive. The question is: how long will it take people to realize and get fed up?”

That quote is from Walter Murch. A guy that knows a thing, or two, about film making. Go read the article for the full details.

I’m not a fan of the current 3D film craze so I hope it goes away soon. If it doesn’t, fair enough. I just hope people continue to make films that can rely on story and characters and not cheap tricks to draw an audience.

Warner Brothers, say it ain’t so?

Beloved Hedwig.Roger Ebert: “The final film will be in 3-D. This installment was once planned for retrofitted 3-D, but Warner Bros., a studio that enforces traditional standards, decided against that after observing the disastrous results of other 2-D films converted to 3-D. Presumably the next film will have its 3-D done well. It will suffer in brightness and clarity, and that is a shame. Look closely at the 2-D opening Warner Bros. logo here and you will swear it’s in 3-D.”

I thought they’d made the decision to do Deathly Hallows in 2-D because it was a better way to make movies, apparently not. I hope they distribute it as 2-D as well, otherwise there’s a good chance we won’t see it in theaters. 3-D gives my wife a headache, and it makes for less of a good experience in my opinion.

Deathly Hallows Reshoots

Harry Potter, boy wizardHitFlix: “Radcliffe, who plays the iconic wizard, was asked to discuss the film’s important and emotional epilogue which paparazzi had caught being filmed at King’s Cross station in London. The actor sort of laughed and replied, “Partly pointless to [discuss it] since we are re-shooting parts of it””

Looks like the gang has come back together for some reshoots. Over 10-years together. Amazing.

Bucking the trend

Why so serious?Hero Complex (LA Times): “Nolan was most eager to talk about the fact that Warner Bros. had agreed with his argument that the film should resist the current 3-D craze and instead use high-definition approaches and IMAX cameras to strike out on a different cinematic path than the stereoscopic technology that, for better or worse, has become the dominant conversation in the blockbuster sector.”

Thank goodness someone has sense enough to move away from this horrible 3-D trend. Just make great movies, you don’t need 3-D.
