Do I need a smart phone?

A cute little monkey.CNN: “Technology won’t stop evolving, so perhaps figuring out how to manage this tech-infused, mobile life may be the way of the future. Kenny Fair, a 60-year-old graphic designer in Overland Park, Kansas, said he’s had to learn to control himself and his gadgets since purchasing a Palm Pre smartphone in August 2009, an event he described as “an immediate love affair” that changed his life.”

Articles like this make me stop and ask myself if I really need, or want, a smart phone.

Yeah, I guess I do.

Good luck.

Survey says!

TechCrunch: “When AT&T’s monopoly on the iPhone ends in the U.S., it is not going to be pretty. With increasing evidence that Verizon is preparing to offer the iPhone 4 early next year, many people are waiting before buying one or upgrading. Many of those are existing AT&T customers who want the same phone on a better network. According to a new survey by market research firm Morpace, 34 percent of AT&T iPhone owners are waiting for the iPhone to be available on another carrier before upgrading, and a full 47 percent of current AT&T iPhone owners say they would consider switching to Verizon. So almost half of AT&T customers surveyed are not completely satisfied with AT&T’s network.”

If Verizon gets an iPhone, the jury is still out, this could be a really good thing for iPhone customers currently on AT&T. It may mean those that do not bail will have a much better network, especially if a whole bunch of them jump ship for Verizon. You know how polls are, you have to take them with a grain of salt, but this one does make for great “iPhone on Verizon” fodder.

You’d also need to take a look at the number of people that just upgraded to the iPhone 4. I’m fairly certain AT&T’s new, higher priced, penalty for canceling your contract will keep a lot of folks on their network for the next two years.

It’ll also be very interesting to see if the iPhone can make a dent in the Android juggernaut at Verizon. I’m not so confident it will. Android based phones are pretty darned nice and they come in all different shapes and sizes now, one to suit every need. Drop the iPhone in the mix and you may see some very aggressive pricing of Android phones on Verizon. Stir in an average person that wants a smart phone and you may see a lot more Android’s on the street. For some the iPhone has lost its’ luster, especially since you can get an Android phone that comes fairly close. Who knows, with the mystique surrounding the iPhone and Verizon customers clamoring for the device it may be a day one hit. Remember the “I don’t care” video, yeah, that phenomenon.

We’ll all have to wait and see.

Just make sure you get the one with the Bigger GB’s and the WiFi.

My Little Pony is Evil

DailyTECH: “If you download Jackeey Wallpaper from Google’s Android Market for your smartphone, you might want to start worrying just about now. The popular app has been exposed as potentially being a piece of malware designed to steal your personal info and send it to China.”

I knew it! My Little Pony is pure evil! I’m just sayin’.

Windows 7 Apps “in your spare time”

Electronista: “Microsoft is hoping to bolster its early Windows Phone 7 app list with those made by its staff in their free time, a memo obtained Thursday said. As part of the same note that promised free WP7 phones to staff, mobile lead Andy Lees encouraged workers to write their own apps to help support the launch. The company is further rolling out an employee developer program to fast-track apps made unofficially within Microsoft.”

Could be a nice little side business for Microsoft employees.

Me, January 2002

Here’s what I had to day about mobile computing in 2002.Ribbit

“This *IS* the future of computing devices! Oh just you wait. Yessir, just you wait. Some day you’ll be carrying one of these little gems around wondering how you ever got along without it. It’ll be just like your first cell phone. One day you were doing fine without one, the next day you’re lost without it. Can you imagine carrying your computer around, doing your work, blogging from the coffee shop (I know people already do this!), walking back to your desktop and docking this baby so you can use the full size keyboard and mouse?”

I’d imagine I was talking about the Tablet PC at the time, the link to the Microsoft page is 404.

The iPad may eventually deliver on the promise.

Torn, which smart phone?

Over the weekend I had the opportunity to goof around with my cousin’s Droid Incredible by HTC. Oh my! It’s a beautiful phone, I love the sense UI. The iPhone definitely has big competition and since you can get this phone on Verizon it makes purchasing it quite easy for those looking for something close enough to an iPhone.

I’m very tempted by it and I have an iPhone app for heavens sake!

Bravo HTC for upping the ante. This is good for the smart phone market, no matter how you slice it.

Gruber on Balmer on iPhone

John Gruber: “Not only was he wrong about the iPhone, but he was even more wrong about Windows Mobile. Three years ago Ballmer was talking about 60, 70, 80 percent market share. This week, Gartner reported that Windows Mobile has dropped to 6.8 percent market share in worldwide smartphone sales, down dramatically from 10.2 percent a year ago. (The same report puts iPhone OS at 15.2 percent, and Android at 9.6.)”

Microsoft has really dropped the ball on mobile computing. They had a huge lead with Windows Mobile, managed to sit on it, and now Apple, Google and RIM have taken them to the woodshed for a good old fashioned butt whoppin. But, and yes, there’s always a but, never count them out of the game. Kin may be a complete bust at the moment, but they’ll learn from that mistake, and who knows, maybe they’ll open source their mobile effort just to try and stick it to Google?

Stranger things have happened, right?

Being first isn’t always good

Green Apple LogoScobleizer: “It’s sad that Bill Gates tried to get Microsoft to deliver the Tablet PC vision but Microsoft mostly failed where Apple has largely succeeded. Some because the market is more ready for a Tablet PC today (we have wifi in a lot of places now, and 3G coverage is getting there). Some because technology has evolved (battery life is dramatically better than back then and lighter too). Some because prices have come down.” – Think about Apple for a minute, their successes, their failures. The iPod, Sony was in this space long before Apple. Apple perfected it, brought us integration with the desktop, and great online store integration. The iPhone, there were many, many, other cell phone companies. Apple perfected the smart phone, brought us integration with the desktop, a great online store, and the web anywhere, at any time, the way we wanted it, and gave developers a way to make money and not have to worry about distribution. Now, we have the iPad, Apple has once again perfected, or at least have a great start to perfecting it. Apple brought us great integration with the desktop, a great online store, web anywhere, books anywhere, movies anywhere, and gave developers a great way to make money and not have to worry about application distribution.

See a pattern here? Apple may not be first, but they definitely know how to perfect the user experience.

iPhone on Verizon?

CNN: “(CNET) — Rumors that the iPhone is coming to Verizon have been buzzing around the Web over the last day or so. So what should Verizon iPhone users expect when the device finally comes to the nation’s largest wireless network?” – There are three very interesting “takeaways” in that article for me.

  • AT&T 3G Network is faster.
  • Being able to talk and surf at the same time is a feature of the network, not the phone. AT&T is GSM based, Verizon is CDMA.
  • Verizon’s network may collapse just as AT&T’s did under the added weight of iPhone use.
