D&D

20140720-212226-76946260.jpgThe New Yorker: “For much of its existence, D. & D. has attracted ridicule, fear, and threats of censorship from those who don’t play or understand the game. It is surrounded by a fog of negative connotations.”

As teens my brothers and I played a metric ton of D&D with our friends. It wasn’t uncommon for our Mom to find us crashed on the floor in the morning after a long nigh of campaigning.

It’s been years and years since we’ve played but it’s something I will never forget, not to mention something that shaped my early teenage years.

Every once in a while I think about the game and the great times we had as teenagers and wish we could experience it again.

Best comments in code

I was pointed to this great thread on StackOverflow about comments in code and instantly thought of a comment I ran across in one of our test tools codebase. Since I couldn’t add it to the StackOverflow thread, I’ll post it here for your enjoyment.

A Liberal, with an M4?

Yes, that’s right. I said Liberal, and M4, in the same sentence. As a kid I was brought up around guns; hand guns and rifles. I had a shotgun at the ripe old age of 10. I loved shooting. We’d go out with Dad and shoot tin cans and other targets, it was fun. I used to hunt game bird. Would I love a chance to fire a Barrett .50 cal? DARNED STRAIGHT! Now, I’m not your typical Lefty, I’m just left of center. I’m a Democrat that believes in your right to bear arms. I don’t have an issue with folks having weapons, I also don’t have a problem with registering my weapons, which I believe is the sticking point with most Righties and Lefties.

Anywho, I thought I’d share a picture of our daughter having fun, with an M4. Yes, the old man is a bit jealous.

Oh, and don’t worry. This weapon wasn’t fired illegally. This picture wasn’t taken in California.

It’s iPhone 4 day!

AHHHHHH!I’m sure everybody’s Twitter stream has been full of iPhone 4 reports. A common thread is LONG lines, except in Fresno for some reason. UPDATE: Apparently the lines are long, even in Fresno.

Dave Winer via Twitter, Chelsea, New York.
Mike Rundle via Twitter, Raleigh, North Carolina.
Alisa Manjarrez via Twitter RT, Fresno, California.
Fraser Speirs via Twitter, Glasgow, Scotland.
David Barnard is a bit frustrated with the insanity, via Twitter.
Craig Hockenberry is having dreams of great Twitterrific sales while waiting in line.

We already have a review from Mike Rundle.

Some pictures from Dave Winer, his first Fail Whale on the iPhone 4, and the iPhone 4 and 3GS side-by-side.

Picture of the line in Philadelphia John Gruber was standing in, via Twitter.

Marco Arment is in a great line, they’re being fed and watered, via Twitter.

There are reports of Apple Stores out of iPhones, John Gruber via Twitter.

Bottom line, I WANT ONE! Hopefully they’ll have plenty of stock in September when I’m eligible.

There’s an iPad for that

Chuck Hollis [via Mike Rohde]: “I don’t think I’ll be buying any more desktops going forward. I don’t think I’ll even be buying any more laptops going forward.

They’ve all been largely obsoleted (at least at my home) by a sleek $499 device that doesn’t really have any right to be called a “computer” in the traditional sense.”

Go read what Chuck has to say, it’s a fun story, and I’m sure it’s being repeated all over the world. The iPad will become “the” device for a large group of people. A lot of techies will claim it’s not useful and that’s a perfectly valid assertion. It’s not useful for them, the techno-geek, but for the average person that browses the internet, or watches movies, or reads a book once in a while, it could be the perfect device.

I know for a fact an iPad would be the perfect device for my wife 99% of the time. She mostly browses her favorite sites and checks out Facebook. Once we have the entire gamut of Facebook games running on the iPad, she’ll probably want one.

I thought I’d get out the Seamus Coremally Guinness “Ad” since I’m no longer using these lovely graphics.

Hi Seamus, don’t drink too much tonight.
