Who wins?

A cute little monkey.tap tap tap: In the end, I think that both Apple’s and Google’s models will thrive and there won’t be a clear-cut winner. They’re ultimately two completely different markets, targeted toward two different kinds of users… and two different kinds of developers.

That’s a good way to look at it. There are those of us completely sold out to iOS and there are those sold out to Android.

We all win.

Setting yourself apart

Daring Fireball: “The whole point of Apple’s success with iOS has been the opposite of “write once, run anywhere”. It’s more like “write a version that is specifically optimized for this particular device”.”

This is one of the things I love about Apple. A lot of companies would be fine with slapping some simple mouse based helpers into their emulator, change it ever so slightly so it works on the desktop, and ship it. Apple doesn’t do that. They tune their software for the hardware platform. As it should be.

The Mythical White iPhone

Pocket Lint: “Well, according to our jacket wearing gent, Apple is having trouble getting its two suppliers in the Far East to match the white used in the manufacturing of the parts. The white home button colour doesn’t match the white front face plate colour, it turns out.”

Is Android less open than iPhone?

TechCrunch: “In theory, I’m right there with you. The thought of a truly open mobile operating system is very appealing. The problem is that in practice, that’s just simply not the reality of the situation. Maybe if Google had their way, the system would be truly open. But they don’t. Sadly, they have to deal with a very big roadblock: the carriers.”

Leave it to the carriers to ruin a good thing. As others have said, this could be one big reason Verizon doesn’t have the iPhone.

iPhone Funeral

Daring Fireball: “Microsoft has never been cool, has never had good taste, but their lack of cool and lack of taste are spiraling out of control.”

I’m not exactly sure why Microsoft would target the iPhone? Apple has, what, 6% of the mobile market? They’re also limited to AT&T as a carrier.

John is right, the bigger threat is Android with all the OEM deals. Actually, the biggest threat of all is Microsoft. They haven’t exactly done so well in the mobile market lately. Hopefully they don’t pull another KIN.

That doesn’t sell me

Watch out! It's a blog fly!Gigaom: “Again, Android is far from perfect, but it offers developers some pleasantries that iOS, and more to the point, Apple, doesn’t provide. Android development is done in Java, as opposed to Apple’s once-obscure Objective C. Java may be old-school, but it’s still a primary development platform for a wide swath of developers, particularly in enterprise IT, which does a great deal of the world’s application development.”

Wow, you’re selling Java as a good reason to switch to Android? Strike one, two, and three. Java? Really? I’d rather use Go to be perfectly honest, or how about C#/.NET (via Mono), that would go a long way toward selling the platform for me. Ok, ok, Java isn’t really that bad, but there are better choices today.

I also love that you mention Joe Hewitt, I’m sure Joe is a nice guy, but he has a strange sense of what “Big Brother” means. Doesn’t he work for Facebook? The worlds biggest “Big Brother.”

Seriously, no offense to Joe, I just don’t agree with him, that’s all. I love the iOS platform and wish I could make a living doing nothing but applications for it. In fact, I’d jump at the chance. Mobile is too much fun!

Netflix + Apple TV, a match made in heaven.

Bloomburg Businessweek: “Programming from Netflix may enhance the appeal of a product that has been called a “hobby” by Apple executives and hasn’t resonated widely with consumers. The Cupertino, California-based company is due to release a $99 version of Apple TV, $130 less than the current model, people familiar with the plans said last week.”

We’re already Netflix subscribers, I love the service, but a dedicated box for $99.00 sounds good. Add that to the list of Apple stuff I’d like to own.

Smartphone Evolution

Marco Arment:“Fans of the former types of smartphones and much of the tech press declared this smartphone useless or not capable enough because of its lack of a keyboard, its non-removable battery, its lack of expansion slots or ports, and other hardware features in which Apple chose differently from what most other manufacturers were doing.”

I was just talking to a co-worker about this the other day. Apple managed to wake up the smartphone market. Now we have such great choices; iPhone, Android, and Palm.

Apple rejects Camera+ VolumeSnap

Tap Tap Tap Blog: “Unfortunately, Apple decided to reject it. This doesn’t come as a complete surprise since it wasn’t our first time being rejected for that very feature. Their exact reason for the rejection is the following:”

Darn. I’ve been trying to convince my wife she needs this application. I thought I could sale her on the update because using the volume keys to snap a picture makes taking a picture more like using a camera. It’s a nice feature.

More iPhone on Verizon Rumors

Mashable/Apple: “Evidence continues to mount to support expectations that Apple’s iPhone 4 will finally launch on Verizon this coming January. The latest: Sources close to Apple’s hardware suppliers say that Apple has ordered millions of CDMA chipsets from Qualcomm. CDMA is the wireless technology used by Verizon.”

I guess we’ll find out some time in 2011, but the article says Apple should receive CDMA chipsets in December in time for a January 2011 ship date. That doesn’t jibe. I can’t see them shipping mass quantities of iPhones in January if they receive chips in December. That’s not enough lead time in my humble opinion. But, hey, maybe their manufacturing is super efficient and ready to roll out large quantities of phones? Also, why CDMA? That seems like the wrong technology? I could buy an LTE based phone, or a CDMA/LTE phone, but a straight CDMA phone seems off.
