New York City; Grit and Grime

Watch out! It's a blog fly!Pando Daily [by Josh Miller]: “For now, I miss the grit and grime of New York. It is real and raw, and the commotion of the city is contagious. Startup life is characterized by constant motion and tenacious tinkering, not hikes on Mt. Tam and brunch in the Mission, and the pace of life and breadth of humanity in New York is invigorating. I like to tell people: New York is like coffee. You know it’s not good for you, and you don’t really like the taste, but you just can’t get enough. The rush, the jitters, they’re addicting, as are startups.”

I’d love to give New York City a try. I really would. I’ve heard from more than one person that the tech business in New York City is very different from business in San Francisco. I wouldn’t mind giving that a try.

This must be a mid-life crisis thing. I want to wonder around. I wish we could be completely mobile, move from city to city for the next five years. Could my lovely wife handle that kind of life? Probably not. Have I been trying to convince her we should try this? Absolutely.

I think they call it wanderlust. I definitely have it.

Alright! You, sir? How about a shave? Come and visit your good friend Sweeney! You sir! Too, sir. Welcome to the grave… I will have vengeance. I will have salvation… Who, sir? You sir! No one’s in the chair. Come on, come on! Sweeney’s waiting.

Ok, quick, what movie! Send your guesses here.

I had no idea

Dave Winer: “I found out about this when I ran the first BloggerCon at Harvard in 2003. I asked for sponsorships from some of the biggest names in the tech industry, and was told by each of them that they required a prime speaking spot as quid pro quo. I said maybe they could sponsor a meal, and speak at it, but I’d have to label them as paid speaking slots. I was told that was not acceptable. I told them to keep their money. We’d find a way to make it work without sponsors, and we did.”

Wow, I really had no idea this is how things worked at conferences. Naive? Yep, completely.

It’s no wonder Dave doesn’t dig how conferences work.

GoogleYork

Wired: “So down, in fact, that the web search titan just dropped $1.9 billion to acquire one of the largest and most historic buildings in all of the Big Apple. At nearly 3 million square feet, 111 Eighth Avenue, the former Port Authority building, sits like a beached, red-brick cruise ship overlooking New York’s Chelsea neighborhood. The building is so big, in fact, that it has elevators large enough to accommodate 18-wheel semi-trucks.”

What’s the Big G up to? There’s a lot of fiber running into the building. Makes you go hmmmm? Especially with the recent Net Neutrality announcement that called out Google Android. (Which made zero sense.)

Hey, LEVEL could use some new space, I wonder if we could sneak the entire company into the building without them noticing?

A Pumpkin for a Wedding

I love carving pumpkins, I really do. It’s something we do every year as a family. This year we didn’t manage to have the time, or everyone together, to carve like we normally do. I guess it’s something I’m going to have to get used to now our girls are all grown up.

When Haileigh and Aaron were married in early October Haileigh asked if I would carve a pumpkin for the wedding. It was a perfect fit, a fall themed wedding, and my love of carving pumpkins. How could I refuse?

It was a challenge, a good challenge, I wanted it to be perfect. It was after all my little girls big day, it had to be perfect. I was nervous about how it would turn out. In the end I was happy with the results, and more importantly, Haileigh was happy with it.

Repeating Failure

Robert Reich (The New Tax Deal: Reaganomics Redux): “Yes, the pending tax bill will give America’s middle and working classes slightly more cash next year. But only for one year. They won’t spend it. They’ll use it to help pay down their debts. Will lower taxes on the rich spur them to create more jobs? Not a chance. Since 1980, Reagan’s supply-siders have said lower taxes on the rich will trickle down to everyone else. Nothing could be further from the truth.”

I hope this bad idea actually works, but I have my doubts. I mean, the eight years under President Bush were so fruitful with this strategy. Yes, that’s a bit of sarcasm. It’s too bad the GOP lawmakers aren’t interested in helping America, they’re only interested in helping the top 1% fill their pockets. Sad really.
