Flavor of the Day

AHHHHHH!Real Free Market: “Clueless people get obsessed with languages and frameworks. No matter what language and framework you use, you have to write your application code. If you use a fancy framework, then you have to write framework-compliant code in addition to your program’s code. With node.js, you’re fiddling around with callback functions and manually managing timing, instead of letting Apache and the OS do it for you.”

It looks like node.js is good, for simple apps. If you want to get serious, find a bigger hammer.

Hey, don’t expect much from JavaScript. It’s an ugly hack. But ugly hacks become standards, if you don’t pay attention.

Webscale, Not Easy

Watch out! It's a blog fly!High Scalability: “Tumblr started as a fairly typical large LAMP application. The direction they are moving in now is towards a distributed services model built around Scala, HBase, Redis, Kafka, Finagle, and an intriguing cell based architecture for powering their Dashboard. Effort is now going into fixing short term problems in their PHP application, pulling things out, and doing it right using services.”

Even the companies you believe are doing it right, start by doing it wrong, and evolve. Twitter, Facebook, and now Tumblr. Webscale is not easy to achieve. Running node.js with a MySQL database isn’t going to cut it. It takes serious planning and thought, and a great operations team to keep the beast running. I know this by experience. I made those same mistakes and learned a lot in the process.

I love this stuff.

Wanted: Lead Chef

Mukilteo Coffee RoastersMukilteo Coffee Roasters: “A unique opportunity with Mukilteo Coffee’s cafe cabuni’ in the woods as come up. We are looking for an experienced lead chef to join our team in our busy little cafe.”

Mukilteo Coffee is my favorite coffee roaster in the world. This would be a great place for Haileigh, if she was able to move.

Anywho, if you’re a Chef looking for work, this looks like a great opportunity.

Empty Nesters

A wonderful boquet of flowers.A Final Beginning??: “Our girls have finally left the house, so maybe this is “empty nest” syndrome. While I miss them desperately, I find myself at a standstill. I feel that my life was so wrapped up in my children that, through no fault of their own, I am now at a complete loss as to what to do. I know I have many contributions that would benefit the right situation. I know I’d be a good worker,a good friend. I am just at a loss how to achieve this.”

We knew this day would come, but we’ve always enjoyed having our girls around. They make us happy. Now that Haileigh is married and living in Arizona with her hubby and Bug is off at school we don’t get to see them as much. Couple that with a new job for me and moving to a different part of California makes for a huge shakeup in life.

I’ve struggled with living in San Luis Obispo a bit. I love the place, I really do, but I sometimes think we’ve had so many changes, all at once, that we’re still trying to settle.

We’ll get through this, we always do. It’s been an interesting year.

Twitter, It’s About Mobile

MG Siegler: “The most powerful aspect of Twitter, to me, is its mobile/client usage. The website is fine, but not its core, in my opinion. Some love it, some hate it. It will never be Facebook — it doesn’t have to be. Twitter’s mobile experience (no matter which app you use) is much better than Facebook’s because the simple nature of the network is a more natural fit for mobile.”

You’d think Zuck would understand how important mobile is. If he thinks Facebook Mobile is good, he’s smoking crack. Facebook’s mobile apps is absolutely hideous and buggy. This is where Twitter shines. There are multiple clients that outstrip the client offered by Twitter. Apps like Twitterrific and Tweetbot are fantastic. I easily do 90% of my tweeting from a mobile client.

Movie line of the week

You gotta love the movies.Good morning movie liners! I know it’s been a while, here’s the line, good luck!

“…And the beauty part is the babies don’t even have to listen ’cause they’re asleep! You know, I wish my parents played Mozart when I slept because half the time I don’t even know what the heck anyone’s talking about!”

Ok, quick, what movie! Send your guesses here.

Side note: Every time I see this scene all I can think of is our youngest daughter, Bug.

Dear FBI, follow @Fahrni

Discovery News: “The US Federal Bureau of Investigation recently released details of a plan to continuously monitor the global activity of Facebook, Twitter and other social networks. A document released on January 19 explains that the FBI is seeking companies interested in building an online monitoring system for the bureau.”

Since I have a public account on Twitter it’s really not a big deal, heck, they can follow my every post on this weblog via my RSS feed.

I’d imagine the really bad people would use private networks to do their jobs, right? But, having said that, there are idiots out there that can’t resist bragging about their badness.

Hunter To Hunted

New York Times: “Which is why Barnes & Noble, once viewed as the brutal capitalist of the book trade, now seems so crucial to that industry’s future.”

I was bummed when Borders declared bankruptcy. Kim and I loved to visit the Visalia Borders, and we actually bought books!

Kim has been using a Kindle for a few years now and I just don’t read much.

This article is worth reading just to see what can happen to market leaders when the get too comfortable.
