Universal iPhone?

Tiggers are wonderful things!CNN: “While the new iPhone will only work on Verizon’s network, the Qualcomm chip Apple is using in these new models is capable of connecting to Verizon’s network, as well as to carriers using the GSM standard, which is what AT&T and T-Mobile USA have.”

Yesterday I was goofing around and tweeted the iPhone V was going to be available on AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, and T-Mobile. Could it be?

Objective-C Memory Management, The Rules

Objective-C Ref CountingInterfacelab.com: “There are only 4 basic rules when it comes to memory management in Objective-C:

If you own it, release it.
If you don’t own it, don’t release it.
Override dealloc in your classes to release the fields that you own.
Never call dealloc directly.

That’s it. The first two are the most important and we’ll get into the basics of object ownership next.”

Just an FYI for those coming from another platform, or language. Remember, Objective-C’s parent is plain ole C, and you can mix C and C++ with your Objective-C. Keep the alloc/free, new/delete rules in mind when allocating objects. Also remember Objective-C objects are reference counted objects. If you want to keep an object around bump its retain count by doing…

anObject = [object retain];

When you’re done make sure you do

[object release];

Otherwise you’ll have a leak in your code.

I’d recommend a quick look at Cocoa Dev Central’s Learn Objective-C tutorial. It’s very good.

Once you have the rules figured out it’s fairly straight forward.

Stay on the Ranch

The Raw Story: “Waterboarding is torture, and Bush has admitted, without any sign of remorse, that he approved its use,” Katherine Gallagher, an attorney with the US-based nonprofit Center for Constitutional Rights, said in a media advisory. “The reach of the Convention Against Torture is wide – this case is prepared and will be waiting for him wherever he travels next. Torturers – even if they are former presidents of the United States – must be held to account and prosecuted. Impunity for Bush must end.”

iPhones, Plans, and Bargains, Oh My

Verizon iPhone 4 Pre-Sales

Mashable: “If you’re a mobile operator, it’s good to have an iPhone in your inventory. This was proven Thursday as Verizon’s first day of iPhone 4 pre-orders turned out to be the most successful first day of sales in the history of the company.”

I’d imagine that will leave the Apply nay sayers a bit perturbed. The big question for Verizon: will the network hold up under the new load?

Major Carriers Mobile Plans

AHHHHHH!Fortune: “But now that Verizon (VZ) has the iPhone, many Americans will be taking a closer look at how the rate plans stack up. To help them choose, the cost-saving service BillShrink has produced a handy chart — copied in full below the fold — of the various plans offered by the four major U.S. carriers.”

Nice look at your options on the different carriers. They’re all pretty close, but Sprint and T-Mobile are pushing hard for your business. No iPhones, but plenty of really nice Android phones.

Looking for a Bargain? Try Virgin Mobile.

Fortune: “As I’ve stated before (and I still can’t understand how they do this) Virgin, who use Sprint’s(S) very solid nationwide 3G network, blow them all away by a long shot. For $25 a month (that’s AFTER tax) unlimited data and text, 300 anytime minutes. $40/month bumps you up to 1200 anytime minutes and $60 is unlimited minutes.”

This is pretty darned amazing. $25.00 for 300 minutes with UNLIMITED text and data? Makes me go hmmmmm. Especially if you can get a nice Android phone with tethering.

San Joaquin Valley High Speed Rail

A wonderful boquet of flowers.Good: “On Tuesday, we got word that engineers at California’s High-Speed Rail Authority recommended that the first stretch of track to be laid should be a 54-mile route through the Central Valley, from Borden to Fresno to Corcoran.”

Can you say jobs? I knew you could. The one thing this will do is upset farmers. We obviously need farms and the rail infrastructure. I hope they’re able to work with farmers to get this done.

Facebook? What’s that?

Ribbit52 Weeks of UX: “In the meantime, Facebook is the current social network juggernaut now worth 50 billion dollars and they seem to have all the momentum in the world. The question is…is Facebook bound by the same laws of physics as everyone else?”

You make the call, will Facebook survive? Each big portal before it has become immensely successful only to be replaced by the next big thing. One thing holds true, my weblog is still here and kicking even as other things go away.

How’s that Mac App Store working for you?

Kevin Hoctor: “Besides losing cash flow, I also wanted to be able to compare direct and app store sales. Running both throughout the month of January was very revealing. My direct sales are right on target with my projections for January based on MoneyWell sales in the previous two years. Unit sales from the Apple store are three to four times our direct sales. The two stores seem to be capturing customers independent of each other. Selling my apps through the Mac App Store has almost tripled my overall revenue. I’m not complaining at all.

Emphasis is mine. I believe tripling sales is a good thing, right? Wish I could do that with RxCalc.

Congratulations Kevin.

Pigeon Protocol?

Slashdot: “Since David Waitzman wrote his tongue-in-cheek Standard for the Transmission of IP Datagrams on Avian Carriers, there have been occasional attempts to actually transmit information via pigeon. One group back in 2001 successfully sent a PING command. But now there’s a practical use for pigeon-based communications: photographers working for the white-water rafting company Rocky Mountain Adventures send memory sticks full of digital photos via homing pigeon so the photos will be ready when the rafters finish up. The company has details on how the pigeons are trained and equipped. It may not be a full implementation of the Pigeon Protocol, but it works in narrow canyons far off the beaten path — and just as David Waitzman presciently predicted, they occasionally suffer packet loss due to hawks and ospreys.”

Egypt Disappears

renesys: “Confirming what a few have reported this evening: in an action unprecedented in Internet history, the Egyptian government appears to have ordered service providers to shut down all international connections to the Internet. Critical European-Asian fiber-optic routes through Egypt appear to be unaffected for now. But every Egyptian provider, every business, bank, Internet cafe, website, school, embassy, and government office that relied on the big four Egyptian ISPs for their Internet connectivity is now cut off from the rest of the world. Link Egypt, Vodafone/Raya, Telecom Egypt, Etisalat Misr, and all their customers and partners are, for the moment, off the air.”
